What if I told you that the next person to save a life in Manly might not be a doctor, a paramedic, or even an adult?

What if that hero was an 11-year-old with a school tie and a "can-do" attitude

This past Heart Week, we returned to St-Mary's Catholic Primary School in Manly for our 4th consecutive year of lifesaving demonstrations. And let me tell you, the energy was electric! We weren't just there to talk; we were there to transform the Year 5 and 6 students into a formidable force of young lifesavers.

At Heart Safe Australia, we believe that you’re never too young to make a difference. Our Heart Safe School program is on a mission to ensure every student in the country is READY, WILLING, and ABLE to act when every second counts.

Why Year 5 and 6? Because Kids Are Superheroes in Training 🦸‍♂️❤️

You might wonder, "Can a primary schooler really handle a cardiac emergency?" The answer is a resounding YES.

Most people do NOT know that approximately 30,000 Australians suffer a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) outside of a hospital every year. That is 575 people every single week. Sadly, only about 1 out of 10 survive.

But here’s the game-changer: when a defibrillator (AED) is used within the first 3 minutes, survival rates can skyrocket to over 70%!

The students at St-Mary's are often the ones closest to their parents, grandparents, or neighbors. By teaching them the ropes, we aren't just giving them a skill: we’re giving them the power to save a family member or a total stranger. They are the ultimate "First Responders" in our communities.

The Toolkit: What is a Defibrillator/AED and How Does it Work?

During our demonstration, we introduced the students to their new best friend: the Mindray C1 Defibrillator. We like to call it a "Doctor in a Box."

What is an AED?
AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator. It’s a smart, portable device that analyzes the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, delivers an electric shock to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

How to use a defibrillator?
The beauty of the Mindray C1 is that it talks to you! It provides clear voice and visual prompts, guiding the user through every single step. At St-Mary's, the kids learned that they don't need to be medical experts. They just need to stay calm and follow the instructions.

The Mindray C1 even has a paediatric switch, meaning one set of pads can be used for both adults and children. It’s fast, it’s reliable, and it’s designed so that even a student can use it effectively.

Mastering the Alphabet of Life: DRSABCD

We didn’t just show them the "Doctor in a Box"; we walked them through the DRSABCD lifesaving steps. This is the gold standard for responding to an emergency:

  • D – Danger: Check for any hazards to yourself, bystanders, or the patient.

  • R – Response: See if they are conscious. "Can you hear me? Open your eyes!"

  • S – Send for help: Call 000 immediately.

  • A – Airway: Check if their mouth and throat are clear.

  • B – Breathing: Look, listen, and feel for normal breathing.

  • C – CPR: Start chest compressions (30 compressions to 2 breaths).

  • D – Defibrillation: Attach the AED as soon as it arrives!

The students at St-Mary's nailed it. They practiced the rhythm of CPR and learned where to place the pads of the AED. Watching their confidence grow from "I'm not sure" to "I can do this" is exactly why we do what we do.

The 3-Steps to Save a Life

At Heart Safe Australia, we simplify the process into our signature 3-Steps to Save a Life:

  1. Call 000

  2. Push (CPR)

  3. Shock (AED)

It’s a simple mantra, but it’s the difference between life and death. By the end of our session, "Call, Push, Shock" was ringing through the halls of St-Mary's.

A Mission for Every Australian School

Our time at St-Mary's in Manly is just the beginning. While this was our 4th year with these amazing students, our ultimate goal is to have the Heart Safe School program integrated into every school across Australia.

We want to empower the next generation so that "bystander anxiety" becomes a thing of the past. Imagine a future where every high school graduate is a certified lifesaver. That’s the Heart Safe vision.

We’re More Than Just Schools

While we love our young heroes, Heart Safe Australia is working hard to protect Aussies wherever they live, work, and play. Our school initiative is one of 12 Lifesaving Program Initiatives, including:

  • Heart Safe Workplace: Turning offices into safe zones.

  • Heart Safe Community & Neighbourhood: Bringing life-saving tech to your street.

  • Heart Safe Home: Because most cardiac arrests happen where we live.

  • Heart Safe Wellness: Our corporate wellness program focusing on breathwork and mindfulness to reduce the stress that leads to heart issues in the first place.

Whether you're on a vessel, a farm, or at the gym, we want a defibrillator within reach.
